The Vineyard

Walla Walla, WA

The owners, a retired architect and interior designer, designed their dream home in Walla Walla to embrace the seasons, embody sustainability, and provide access to their glass studio and surrounding vineyards.  The modern, low-slung architecture with reclaimed siding and solar panels offers striking vistas that capture the ever-changing light, with internal axes framing breathtaking views.

The clients, both skilled in the discipline of architectural design, asked us to provide them with a master plan they could implement in phases. The rolling topography of the entryway was designed to enhance the arrival sequence, nestling the architecture into the expansive landscape. As passionate gardeners with a natural affinity for greenery, the clients’ Corten steel planting beds line the main courtyard, concealing a secret garden and fireplace from the adjacent road.

An east-facing courtyard, sheltered from the wind and sun by two breezeways set on axis, provides a cool pathway to the couple’s adjoining glass studio and guestroom, while framing enchanting views of their vineyard and the golden, rolling hills of the Palouse.

Gentle earthen mounds add a hint of the surprise to come.
