IslandWood, a School in the Woods
Bainbridge Island, WA
With 255 acres of successional Northwest forests, wetlands, ravines, salmon spawning streams, and myriad wildlife, this experiential school teaches environmental stewardship by linking ecology, technology and creative arts. Site planning began with intensive analyses to sensitively locate buildings, circulation, grading, and restoring an existing pond and wetlands. Other restorative efforts included selecting native plants, restoring natural food sources, enhancing habitat, and collaborating in the design of a Living Machine™ that treats wastewater generated onsite using natural processes. This project was the first LEED Gold certified project in Washington State.
Awards:
National Arbor Day Foundation, Special Award for Integration of Education and the Environment, 2003
ASLA, Washington Chapter, Special Mention, 2002
AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE), Top Ten Green Projects National Award, 2002
